To Weatherize a House

If you are going to be away from your home for a period of time we suggest you take the proper precautions to help prevent a pipe from freezing and breaking. Just give us a call and we will do the following:

  • Put anti-freeze in all p-traps at each fixture
  • Turn electricity off to water heater
  • Put covers over all hosebibbs
  • Turn water off at the meter
  • Open one valve to release pressure from lines
  • Put up signs to say this house is weatherized

OPTIONAL

  • If you have a well, we will shut off power to pump
    • Bleed water from pump
    • Bleed pressure from pressure tank
  • Bleed and blow water out of the lines
  • Insulate pipes under the house
  • Put cover over the vent holes and crawl holes
  • Drain water heater

You can take some extra precautions even if you are not leaving your home. Some easy do-it-yourself steps are:

  • Insulate pipes under house with foam rubber insulation
  • Purchase hosebibb covers at almost any local hardware store and install
  • Close off vents
  • Insulate and cover your backflow device to sprinkler system
  • Insulate pump house

If you have any questions, concerns, or would like us to come do these precautions for you don't hesitate to call or e-mail us.
